- '1급 발암물질 '라돈' 특별법으로 관리'
[The Hwankyung Ilbo] Representative Lee Won-wook of the Democratic Party of Korea has proposed a bill to enact a special law on radon safety that requires the government to systematically manage radon, a radioactive substance.
Radon is a natural radioactive material in the form of gas produced by the collapse of uranium and thorium, which is classified as a first-class carcinogen along with asbestos. Therefore, it is a high-risk substance requiring safe and thorough management.
The proposed bill requires the government and local governments to manage radon systematically by establishing a basic plan for radon management and implementing it on a yearly basis.
In addition, it prohibits manufacturing, importing and using radon-emitting products exceeding the allowable standards, and allows the government to order collection or a ban on sale of radon-discharge products.
It also includes a clause that forces businesses to compensate victims for damages caused by exposure to radon emission products, radon discharge materials or development projects.
