[The Hwankyung Ilbo] The government reviewed and finalized a comprehensive plan to reduce marine plastics on May 30.
Plastics, estimated at 80% of the world's marine waste, are threatening the life of marine life, and in particular, microplastics are raising concerns that they could pose a potential danger to humans as well.
The measures aim to reduce marine plastics by 30% by 2022 and 50% by 2030 compared to 2018 through 12 initiatives in the four major sectors.
To fundamentally reduce marine plastic waste, a preventive system will be established considering the characteristics of each source.
The government plans to establish a regular marine garbage collection and transportation system such as installing a collection place in the island area, and arranging purification carriers.
The government also plans to effectively treat and recycle marine plastics through development of related technologies.
In addition, the government will establish a comprehensive and systematic management base for marine waste, and establish a standard ordinance for marine waste management to enhance the management capacity of local governments.
